Matakana Estate has been at the forefront of local Matakana winemaking since this premium, boutique wine region was first developed more than 30 years ago. Matakana Estate’s philosophy has always been to capture the essence of New Zealand’s finest grape varieties from the regions where they grow best. Our Matakana Estate Winery produces award-winning Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Gris under the care of winemaker Richard Robson.
Matakana Estate Lodge has also been an icon on the Matakana landscape since it was built in the early 2000s. It hasn’t always provided luxury accommodation in Matakana; the lodge was originally the family home for one of the first winegrowers in Matakana. The impressive building stands proudly on a ridge, with panoramic views across the Matakana valley and hills.
Luxury accommodation in Matakana
Matakana Estate owner Chrissy Lu first came to New Zealand in 2004 as a student and fell in love with the Matakana region. Her very first wine tasting happened to be at Matakana Estate, and it was here that she began to dream of one day owning her own vineyard. In 2012, that dream came true when she took over Matakana Estate Winery and then, in 2017, purchased the estate’s former family home in order to bring the properties back under one family umbrella and develop a lodge to provide luxury accommodation in Matakana for events and discerning travellers.
The opening of Matakana Estate Lodge is the first stage of a long-term plan that will one day include further accommodation, a wine themed events venue and a spa.
Matakana Estate has offered wine tastings in the old Tasting Room for many years. But now it is time for something new. We will soon be boasting a new Cellar Door up at the winery itself where you can get up close and personal right in the midst of the smells and sights of real wine making. The new Cellar Door is planned to open mid 2020, but until then you are still able to visit us up at the winery 7 days a week from 11am – 5pm. Enjoy ‘a wine-tasting’ as one of our staff talks you through our wide choice of offerings. As the largest vineyard in Matakana we are able to offer something for everyone. Or perhaps you just fancy ‘a glass of wine’ with a ‘Build your own’ platter? Perhaps you’re just after ‘a bottle to go’ – or better still all of the above. Whatever takes your fancy – the Cellar Door is open for you.
