Wine tasting

Wine tasting can be a great fun experience. It doesn’t need to be something for only the wine connoisseurs amongst us. Whether you are a wine newbie or an experienced taster, wine tasting is  a fun way to learn about what you like and don’t like. It’s the perfect opportunity to try new wines without having to invest in a bottle if you don’t like it.

For those unfamiliar with wine-tasting there is an excellent article by Louise Jones in the ‘Winerist’. It is a great 2 min read.

WINE TASTING ETIQUETTE: The Do’s and Don’ts

Our Cellar Door

Matakana Estate has been at the forefront of local winemaking since this premium, boutique wine region was first developed some 30 years ago. Matakana Estate’s philosophy has always been to capture the essence of New Zealand’s finest grape varieties from the regions where they grow best. Our Matakana vineyard produces award winning Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Gris.

The Matakana Estate Cellar Door ‘Tasting Room’ is open 7 days a week from 11am -5pm. With spectacular views over the vineyard, this is notably one of the most beautiful cellar doors open to the public in Matakana. There is also outdoor seating in the shade around the Tasting Room and in The Enchanted Forest.

Sheep shearing & sheep dog shows

Home of the world famous pink sheep. These shows provide a unique insight as to how we farm our sheep in New Zealand, then harvest and use their wool. You will see how sheep dogs round up the sheep, which are then sorted and shorn. An entertaining show for the entire family.

Oyster Tours

Oyster farmers have the sea ingrained in them, and our local farmers are no exception.

Being passionate seafarers, they love nothing more than taking guests on the low seas to discover the hidden gems of the Matakana Coast Harbours.

You will be taught the way these salty vivalves are caught, grown and ultimately eaten.

Fishing

You don’t have to go far to catch fish in this area.  The most popular are Snapper, but our anglers frequently catch many different species such as Trevally, John Dory, Kahawai, Kingfish and even the odd shark. Whilst on the water you may even see dolphins, whales, gannets and other birds putting on one of nature’s most spectacular shows, this is fishing at its finest. If you are a keen diver, there is an abundance of shell fish including Oysters, Scallops and Crayfish.
