Matakana Estate is a well-known Matakana winery that has been at the forefront of local winemaking since this premium, boutique wine region was first developed some 30 years ago. Like many respected New Zealand wineries, Matakana Estate was established by descendants of Croatian migrants who originally settled in and around Auckland more than 100 years ago. From the very beginning, our Matakana winery established itself as a producer of top-quality wines, attracting attention and plaudits worldwide, and winning a number of awards in international wine competitions.
Our winemaker at Matakana
Richard has been with us at our Matakana winery since early 2007, when he moved here from his native Australia to take over the winemaking reins at Matakana Estate. Since then, he has used his considerable experience to hone and refine our classically-styled varietals and blends to a consistently high level, focusing on bringing out each wine’s varietal and regional characteristics with minimum interference.
He grew up in Sydney and gained his winemaking degree at the renowned Charles Sturt University in New South Wales. Richard went on to make wine for a number of respected Australian wineries, including Charles Melton, Yalumba and Plantagenet (where he was Chief Winemaker before joining Matakana Estate) and has also had a winemaking spell in the Rhone Valley area of southern France.
Richard lives in Matakana with his wife and two young sons and he describes Matakana as “one of the most wonderful places in the world, not only for growing grapes, but for enjoying life”.

We are situated in the heart of Matakana, a hidden gem of a wine region, that lies between rolling green hills and beautiful sandy beaches less than an hour’s drive north of Auckland. Rich in culture, the Matakana Coast attracts many visitors to enjoy its fine wines, local foods, busy markets, and art and craft galleries.
Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Syrah
Our home vineyards are sited on rolling, north-facing, well-drained clay slopes. The climate is warm, maritime and occasionally humid which, though sometimes challenging, produces stylish, full-bodied wines with great character.
Hawkes Bay Wines
Merlot, Merlot blends and Syrah
Our Hawkes Bay grapes come from the stony terraces, gravel beds and free-draining alluvial soils on the plains between Havelock and Napier, particularly the renowned Gimblett Gravels / Bridge Pa area. The climate here produces exceptionally good grapes, resulting in some of Hawkes Bay’s – and New Zealand’s – best red wines.
Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir
Marlborough has long been known as the best region for Sauvignon Blanc, but it also produces intense Pinot Noir wines, too. Our grapes our grown in the Wairau Valley, known for its cool, dry climate and stony soils, far inland in the upper reaches where the days are warmer and fruit ripens early.

Our philosophy has always been to capture the essence of New Zealand’s finest grape varieties from the regions where they grow best, so as well as making wines from our own substantial Matakana vineyards, we seek out limited amounts of premium grapes from selected wine regions across New Zealand to make the very best wines we can.
